Les Secrets - ASA’s Fall Ball
BY SIMONE SMITH
On Dec. 1, the University of Maryland’s African Student Association (ASA) hosted its annual Fall Ball in the Stamp Student Union Grand Ballroom. This year’s ball, entitled “Les Secrets”, provided an experience for students to come together and enjoy an amazing show in conclusion of ASA’s Africa Week.
Attendees arrived in their best attire to celebrate the beauty of Africa and crown the next Mr. and Miss ASA. Doors opened at 5:30 p.m. with an assortment of African cuisine to eat while mingling with the guests. At 7 p.m., the show began. The event featured music, modeling, talent and performances.
Each contestant represented a country from Africa during the culture portion of the show. In addition, contestants stepped, modeled and sang as a display of their talents. The event highlighted the diversity of Africa and the many facets of the contestants.
Models participated in a runway show that displayed the work of two designers and featured traditional African clothing with a modern twist. Afrochique and Diazporić took the stage as well and delivered lively performances.
In the end, Elijah Achu and Shanell Erhunmwunse took the crowns. Elijah is a current junior majoring in computer science, and Shanell is a sophomore public health science major.
The audience was full of energy and added to the overall experience of the event. The ball emphasized the richness of African culture. Members of ASA’s executive board planned and executed a phenomenal student-led event. Congratulations to the pageant winners, Elijah and Shanell, on becoming Mr. and Ms. ASA!
